Australian cricket star Matthew Wade, one of the country’s most successful players, is set to begin a coaching career following his retirement from international cricket. Wade, a veteran of 36 Test matches, 97 One-Day Internationals, and 92 T20 Internationals, made his final international appearance at this year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies.
The Tasmanian wicketkeeper-batsman has played crucial roles in many Australian victories over his 13-year career, including a standout performance in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where his efforts were vital to Australia’s championship win.
Now, Wade will join Australia’s coaching staff for the upcoming T20 series against Pakistan, working under head coach Andre Borovec, and will remain with the team through the ODI series starting next week in Melbourne.
Although Wade has transitioned to coaching, he will continue to play domestic cricket for Tasmania and in the Big Bash League with the Hobart Hurricanes for at least two more seasons. Over the winter, he has been coaching youth and second XI sides in Tasmania and hopes to expand his coaching contributions within the Australian system while continuing to play through the summer.
